WonderKid: Designing an AI Companion App Where Learning Feels Like Play
AI companion app where children interact with robot characters to learn, grow, and have fun. The core challenge was designing for two fundamentally different users within a single product: children who needed a joyful, intuitive companion experience, and parents who needed clear visibility, financial control, and tools to actively support their child's development.
The project demanded product-level thinking to define a credit system, parent-child account structure, and scalable feature set that balanced business viability, parental oversight, and genuine engagement.

Key Challenges
- 01
How to design one app that serves two completely different users (kid and parent)?
- 02
How to create a UI that feels cohesive with the provided robot characters across a wide age range (3–13yo)?
- 03
How to design a purchasing and credit flow that is simple and clear for parents, while ensuring kids cannot accidentally or intentionally trigger purchases?
- 04
How to design the binding, authentication, and management flow between parent and child accounts in a way that is easy to understand and use?
Design Process
- 01Align on scope, timeline, and deliverables
- 02Brief and validate feature requirements with PO
- 03Align visual direction with Creative Director
- 04Design and refine kid and parent flows
- 05Share progress and lock approved designs
- 06Validate feasibility with development team
- 07Discuss and resolve design gaps
- 08Revise until approved by all stakeholders
- 09Support QA and launch on both platforms
Key strategy
Design for delight and trust simultaneously, building an experience that captivates kids through a character-first, playful UI while giving parents transparent, friction-free control over every interaction their child has.
Key Solutions
- 01
Character-First Interface
The robot companion anchors the kid experience, large and expressive at rest, scaling down to a persistent avatar during chat without losing presence.
- 02
Multi-User Authentication System
One app serves two account types, parents log in via SSO for secure access, while kids enter the app anytime for frictionless use. For long-term continuity saved session, parents bind the child's account under theirs, enabling QR-based login for kids.
- 03
Parent Control Dashboard
A dedicated parent view for managing child accounts, missions, and credit top-ups, all within the same app.
- 04
Parent-Only Credit Flow
Credits are purchased by parents and assigned to a specific child, preventing unauthorized purchases and unintended redistribution between siblings.
- 05
Mission System
Parents assign tasks with instructions, attachments, and deadlines. The AI companion guides and reminds the child through completion.
- 06
Love Notes
A direct channel for parents to send affirming messages to their child, reinforcing emotional connection within the app.
- 07
Kid-Tuned Visual System
Playful typography and multi-hued soft palette, and cute component style calibrated to complement the provided robot characters and feel cohesive across both the kid and parent interfaces.
